DLC Quest and Lair of the Evildoer Troubleshooting Guide
Having trouble with DLC Quest or Lair of the Evildoer? Check out the following FAQ for some solutions to issues that some players have been experiencing. If you’re still having problems, the contact info for more support can be found at the bottom. This page will be updated with the latest information as needed.
The game doesn’t load, stays minimized, or only shows a black screen
The game attempts to load at full-screen, 1280×720 resolution. You can force the game to run in windowed mode by using a settings file with the following contents:

Either create your own or download this settings file (right-click, “Save As”). Save that as “UserSettings.xml” and place it into “C:\Users\[username]\Documents\SavedGames\DLC\DLCQuest Data\AllPlayers“, making sure to replace the drive letter and username as needed. For Lair of the Evildoer, the folder is “C:\Users\[username]\Documents\SavedGames\LairOfTheEvildoer\LotE Save Data\AllPlayers“.
The game still only shows a black screen!
Try disabling any multi-screen software, such as Samsung MultiScreen, and re-running the game. Additionally, some anti-virus programs will pop up a dialog to notify you of new software. Try temporariliy disabling this and see if it helps.
I have a MacBookPro with an X1600 and it only shows a black screen!
DLC Quest appears to use a feature that is not supported by the X1600 GPU. If you have this hardware, send me an email.
The game crashes immediately or pops up a dialog saying “No suitable graphics card found.”
Try the instructions above for running the game in windowed mode.
If that does not work, there may be a problem with your XNA or .NET installation. Try re-installing using the following links:

Additionally, a clean install of the latest drivers for your video card can help. Download them from your card manufacturer and choose a full or clean install, usually under the “Custom (Advanced)” options in the installer.
My game crashed!
Check for an “err.log” file in either “C:\Program Files (x86)\Desura\Common\DLC Quest” (if installed through Desura) or “C:\Program Files (x86)\Going Loud Studios\DLC Quest” (if you used the standalone installer). Mac users can find the same file in the .app bundle. You may need to adjust the drive letter or “Program Files” location for your computer. Lair of the Evildoer produces a similar log file if it crashes.
My character won’t stop shooting or swinging the bat! (Lair of the Evildoer)
I’m still trying to track this one down, but a few people have reported that their wired or wireless 360 controller is causing their character to shoot continuously, even when using the keyboard/mouse. There are a few workarounds:
- Try rebooting your computer. Yes, I’m serious. It has worked for some people.
- Re-bind the Shoot and Melee keys in the options by setting the controls to Keyboard/Mouse and then changing those actions to something other than Mouse1 and Mouse2. Then switch the controls back to Gamepad.
- Disconnect your gamepad and play using Keyboard/Mouse

- A dxdiag report can also be helpful (if using Windows):
- Press the Windows Key + R (at the same time).
- Type in DxDiag and press Enter to run the DirectX diagnostic tool.
- Click “Save All Information” and save the file somewhere, then attach it to your email.
